Chasing Sunrise Above Mt. Tapyas

Adventures in Coron won’t be completed without having Mt. Tapyas in our itinerary. Instead of availing the Coron Town Tour which includes Mt. Tapyas, we just did the DIY way. It is the easiest and practical thing to do because doing it with our self is totally FREE.

Mt. Tapyas is the second highest mountain in the town of Coron. The name “Tapyas” came from the English word “cut, chip or trim”. The trail can be easily followed starting from San Agustin Street up to Malvar Street which makes a way to a basketball court in which the real hiking begins.

car GETTING THERE:

Mt. Tapyas is totally accessible to find since there are signage posted that leads to its starting point. We walked towards San Agustin Street that turned to Malvar Street then it lead us up  to a basketball court and a hotel. You can start climbing the stairs up from those landmarks.

We decided to climb in the morning because we wanted to catch the sunrise for photography. The hotness of the sun in that morning was not intimidating. We thought it was a good day to fly a drone since the weather was all good. Before we proceed to the trail, we bought bottled water on the store near the basketball court. Bringing of water is important, as to keep you hydrated because believe me, you will sweat a lot. Even climbing in stairs is no joke.

Mt Tapyas is 210 meters high. There are 742 steps up to the top of the mountain. It seems easy, but for a non-climber like me, it was torture for my legs. Climbing a mountain or hiking is not really my thing, however, I’m still game to give it a try.

Coron town surrounded by islands and sea

There are resting benches after number of steps. I couldn’t count how many times I stopped because my legs were shaking. I was really weak. But upon seeing the view, I felt that the urge to go up and do not stop ‘till I reach the summit.

The wind was cold. It hugged me tightly even though my skin was all sweaty. It felt good to finally reach the top after an hour. I made it!

The most rewarding part of climbing the Tapyas was the 360 degrees view of the Coron Town. I saw the small houses surrounded by the sea and enclosed by the scattering islands. Coron town is majestic because they almost have everything.

At the back of the deck, we decided to check out the view of the neighboring mountains. I couldn’t help but to be amazed of the beauty that I saw. The rolling hills, the brown grass, and the sunrise – they were just so perfect to capture. It was a good time to shoot good photos until we found ourselves tired. We also checked out the gazebo where we sit a bit to relax.

Mt. Tapyas is the place where you shouldn’t miss while in Coron. Good thing, I tried to go up because the experience was exciting. Upon seeing the photos I got from my DSLR, I couldn’t hide the bliss I felt. The experience was tiring but totally worth it!
